Springfield 5, WNE 1 -- Game 1

Junior Noah Bleakley (Granby, Mass.) appeared in his first start of the season for Springfield, and threw four strong innings. He allowed one run on three hits while striking out five in his sixth career win for the Pride. Jacob Shpur (East Canaan, Conn.) entered in the fifth inning and pitched the final three innings, earning his first save. He threw to one batter over the minimum and struck out two.  Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass.) provided half of Springfield's hits, going 3-for-3 with three runs and a RBI.

Western New England plated its only run off Bleakley in the first inning. EJ Dudley singled to begin the game, then advanced on a fielder's choice before Zac Nussbaum brought him in with a line drive single up the middle.

Springfield tied the game in the second inning. With the bases loaded, Ryan Smith (Millis, Mass.) lofted a single into center field to score Jake Gleason (South Dennis, Mass.), who reached via a walk to start the frame.

Cooney provided the go-ahead run in the next inning. After walking to start the frame, he advanced to second on a fielder's choice, then came around to score off an error.  The junior would give Springfield a 3-1 lead in the fourth, as he laced a double down the third base line to score Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.) from first. Cooney came around to score again off an error one batter later to extend the Pride's lead.

Springfield tacked on one more run in the sixth. Cooney led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. With one out, Michael Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) singled to left, notching his fourth RBI of the season. Shpur sat down the Golden Bears in order in the seventh to end game one.

Springfield 4, WNE 0 -- Game 2

Sophomore Mitch Wright (Clifton Park, N.Y.) threw a complete game, two-hit effort in his first start of the season. He pitched to the minimum, inducing 12 ground ball outs and striking out four hitters.

The game started as a pitcher's duel, as there was just one hit between the two teams through two and a half innings.

Springfield exploded for four runs in the third. Connor Santoianni (Stormville, N.Y.) reached on an error to start the inning. He advanced to third a couple batters later when Cooney hit an infield single, then came around to score on a throwing error to give Springfield its first run of the game. Barrett followed Cooney with a two-RBI single to right field, scoring both Smith and Cooney. Barrett would steal second, and come around to score on a Noah Bleakley double that hugged the third base line.

Wright surrendered just two baserunners, and neither of them reached third. He was able to induce double plays in both instances to extinguish the momentum. He capped off a masterful performance by striking out Scott West to end Saturday's action.

Springfield hosts more non-conference action on Sunday as it battles Williams in another doubleheader. The first game is slated to start at 12 p.m.
