Box Score 2 Springfield, Mass. - March 8, 2020 -- The Springfield College baseball team delivered two walk-off wins in its doubleheader against Williams College on Saturday at Archie Allen Field.
The Pride remains undefeated, improving to a 5-0 record, marking Springfield's best start to the season since 2011. The Ephs dropped to 0-2 on the season. Facing a three-run deficit in game one, the Pride stormed back with four unanswered runs to take the first game in ten innings. Williams tied the game in the late innings of game two, but Springfield put up the winning run in the seventh to clinch a sweep.

Springfield 6, Williams 5 -- Game 1
Chad Shade (Pittsfield, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Jimmy Shriner (Cranford, N.J.) to score the game-winning run in the tenth inning as Springfield took game one in walk-off fashion, 6-5. Brendan Kirck (Hamden, Conn.) toed the rubber for Springfield, and threw two innings. The sophomore permitted five runs on four hits and struck out three. Ben Arnold (Deerfield, Mass.) entered in relief and allowed just two hits in five shutout innings, striking out four. First-year Alexander Gonfrade (Bellingham, Mass.) followed with three perfect frames, as Springfield's relief corps held the Ephs hitless in the final five innings.
Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass.) notched three hits while driving in a pair. Jake Gleason (South Dennis, Mass.) went 2-for-5 with two RBI, and Shade finished with a pair of RBI as well. Michael Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) drew four walks.
Williams struck for a pair of runs in the first inning. After a pair of walks put a runner in scoring position, Jakob Cohn delivered a two-out, two-RBI double to give the visitors an early lead.
Both Adam Willametz (Berlin, Conn.) and Nick Fazio (Kings Park, N.Y.) singled to begin Springfield's half of the second inning. A sacrifice bunt advanced put both runners in scoring position for Cooney, who scorched a first-pitch single up the middle to score two and tie it up, 2-2.
Williams rallied for three runs in the third. Mike Stamas laced an RBI double, then Erik Mini singled a couple batters later to bring in Stamas. Kohn hit a sac fly later in the inning to plate another run, giving the Ephs a 5-2 lead.
Springfield wouldn't answer until the sixth. With bases loaded and one out, Shade poked a single to right field to cut the deficit to 5-3. A few batter later, Gleason hit an opposite field single to left, scoring two and tying the ballgame.
In the then, Adam Willametz (Berlin, Conn.) made it to second base on an error. Ryan Smith (Millis, Mass.) executed a sacrifice bunt to move his teammate over to third. A pair of walks sent Shade to the plate with the bases loaded. He hit a chopper to Ryan Young at second base, who tried turning a double play. But Shade beat the throw to first, allowing Shriner to score and win the ballgame.
Springfield 4, Williams 3 -- Game 2
Shade finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run. Also, Barrett and Gleason notched a hit and RBI each to help the offense.
John Daley (Huntington, Mass.) got the ball to start, and went two innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Nick Naples (Berlin, Conn.) followed and worked two shutout innings. Ryan Lawrence (Colchester, Conn.) and Ian Benoit (Pittsfield, Mass.) combined for the final 3 innings. Lawrence worked 1.1 innings and allowed one run on two hits, while Benoit pitched 1.2 shutout innings and earned his first win of the season.
Williams struck first in the second inning. With two runners in scoring position, Eric Pappas delivered a single with two outs to give the Ephs a quick 2-0 lead. Springfield cut the lead in half in the third, when Shade legged out an infield single to score Barrett. Springfield took the lead in the fifth. Cooney reached on an error to start, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Shade brought in his teammate with a single to tie the game, then Gleason hit a go-ahead RBI double to give Springfield a 3-2 advantage.
Mini drew a walk to begin the sixth, then Billy Shea knocked him in with a single to tie the game, 3-3, in the late innings. Each team was sat down in order over the next two half innings. Cooney led off the bottom of the seventh, and took the second pitch of the inning down the left field line for a double. Barrett worked a 1-2 count before sending the fifth pitch of the at-bat into left field for a walk-off single.
Barrett provided the game-winning single to score Jack Cooney and defeat Williams in game two, 4-3.
Springfield is back in action on March 15, taking on William-Patterson in a doubleheader in Auberndale, Florida. Game is one slated to start at 10 a.m.
