Box Score Springfield, Mass. - March 8, 2020 - The Springfield College women's lacrosse program dropped to Middlebury College by a 23-4 decision on Sunday afternoon on Stagg Field.
Springfield now holds a 2-3 record and Middlebury, who came into the contest ranked No. 1 overall in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll, improve to 2-0 on the season. The game marks the second contest in a row that the Pride have played a nationally ranked team.
Springfield's Gabby Fogg (Kennebunk, Maine) led the Pride with a goal while also winning four draws and securing a pair of ground balls. Kate Sarnacki (Granby, Mass.), Allison Delmonte (Bridgewater, Mass.), Anjelia Altebrando (Miller Place, N.Y.) all notched a goal for Springfield. In between the pipes, Brenna Keefe (Acton, Mass.) made five saves. Springfield was edged in draws, 14-13.
Six different players scored three goals for Middlebury. The Panthers held a 31-11 shot advantage over the Pride and caused nine turnover defensively. Middlebury was led by Jane Earley, who finished with five points.
Middlebury gained an early lead as the Panthers scored four-straight to start the contest, capped off by a free-position shot from Susan Rowley at 19:06 to make the lead 4-0. At 16:03, Delmonte would find Altebrando cutting towards the crease for the Pride first score of the game. From there, Middlebury rattled off eight straight goals to push the deficit to 12-1 with 2:57 remaining. With 25 ticks left in the half, Fogg would spin off defenders and score to give the Pride another goal, making the halftime score 12-2.
The Pride would strike first with a free-position goal from Delmonte just 56 seconds into the game, bringing the deficit to 12-3. Middlebury would continue to grow their lead by going on another scoring run that would elevate their lead to 22-3 and taking the victory.
Springfield will travel to Stevens next Tuesday at 1 pm.
