Box Score Norton, Mass. - October 20, 2021 - Playing in their third double overtime match of the season, the Springfield College women's soccer program tied Wheaton College, 4-4, on Wednesday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
Springfield sets their record at 6-5-2 with a 4-2-2 record in the NEWMAC, while the Lyons falter to 7-6-2 and 3-4-1 in the conference play. Springfield rattled off 27 shots in the game with 15 landing on frame. The Lyons edged Springfield in corner kicks, 7-3.
It was a historic afternoon for Springfield's Kaleigh Dale (Mansfield, Conn.) recorded her sixth hat trick of her career and surpassed the 100-point mark for her career. Dale joins Angel Schofield as the only two student-athletes in program history to eclipse the 100-point total. Schofield tallied 127 points over her 1989-1992 career. In net for Springfield, Taryn Ryan (Holyoke, Mass.) steered away seven shots.
For the home team, Wheaton was led by Chole Troy with two scores and Sadie Recht with a goal and a helper. Kaitlin Gossart and Gabby Marcus combined for 11 saves in split time.
Springfield struck first in the contest as Adalia Malick (Bristol, Conn.) pushed it to the left side and powered a goal past Gossart to give the Pride a 1-0 lead in the early moments of the 10th-minute. In the 26th-minute, Wheaton evened the score as Chole Troy found the ball off a corner kick and snuck it into the right corner to make the score 1-1, however, it only took Springfield ten seconds to regain the lead as Dale chipped in shot off the post, making the score 2-1. Wheaton took a chance at 31:52 to even the score once again, but Ryan would make a play on the ball to hold the lead at 2-1. At the 36:14 mark, Lily Brown crossed into the box and found a Sadie Recht for the equalizer and knotting the score at 2-2. Yet again, Dale provide a quick response for Springfield with her second goal of the contest as the senior dangled through the Lyons' defense and pumped in a goal, which gave Springfield a 3-2 lead in the 37th-minute. Wheaton would seek another goal before the half, but Ryan would wall up a pair of shots and allow the Pride to go into the break with a one-goal advantage.
Wheaton tied the game once again, at 53:44, as Recht connected with Jamie Rattenni at the top of the box for the score to make the score 3-3. Wheaton would gain a 4-3, in the 64th-minute, as Troy tapped in a penalty kick and gave Wheaton their first lead of the afternoon. In the 71st-minute of regulation, the Pride were also awarded a penalty kick, which was punched in by Dale and let the score stay even at 4-4. Springfield was awarded a game-winning opportunity at the end of regulation as the Pride earned a indirect kick, which Dale took. The Lyons' stacked the box and blocked the attempt. Malick received the rebound and looked for the win, but the shot rang off the post ensueing the extra period.
Springfield's defense only allowed one shot on goal in the two overtime periods combined, however could not capitalize on their strong opportunities, which ended the game in a 4-4 draw.
Springfield will now shift their focus to their Senior Day match against Brandeis on Saturday at 1 pm.
