Box Score Worcester, Mass. - October 23, 2021- The Springfield College men's soccer program secured a 2-0 victory over Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Granger Field.
Springfield lifts to 9-5 and 4-2 in conference play, while Clark falls to 7-6-3 and 1-2-3 in the NEWMAC. Clark held the slight edge in shots, 11-10.
Clayton Knibbs (Madison, Conn.) helped secure the seventh shutout victory for the Pride this season as the junior recorded five saves on the afternoon.
Melvin Vincent collected three saves in the setback for the hosts.
The game was held in a scoreless tie for the entire first frame, as each team were terrific defensively. Knibbs collected two saves, including a diving stop at the 42:41 mark, which allowed Springfield to remain in a 0-0 tie with Clark, heading into the half.
The strong defensive play carried over in the second frame for the Pride with Knibbs recording another save at the 57:40 mark. Clark's Anyolo Makatiani would look to give the Cougars the lead in the 67th-minute, yet the Pride was able to block each attempt and preserve the tie at 0-0. In the 74th-minute, the Pride defended a corner kick to perfection and cleared the ball out to Andrew Ma (Upper Saddle River, N.J.), who split two defenders, before punching in the goal to give Springfield a 1-0 lead and breaking the scoreless deadlock. The Cougars continued to hold possession in their half of the field, looking for the equalizer. At 77:43, Clark would send a free kick into the box that got batted around, but eventually, was cleared by Patrick Silva (Pittsfield, Mass.). Springfield would score again in the 90th-minute as Derick Arhin (South Windsor, Conn.) would control a pass and dish off to Finn Welch (Williamstown, Mass.) for the easy chip-in goal, capping off the 2-0 road victory for Springfield.
Springfield returns to action on Tuesday, October 26 as the Pride welcome Castleton to Brock-Affleck Field for their final non-conference contest of the regular season.
