Wellesley Sneaks Past Field Hockey

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - October 30, 2021 - The Springfield College field hockey program fell to Wellesley, 2-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday evening at Stagg Field.

The Pride close their 2021 season with a 5-12 overall record, while Wellesley improves to 9-6 and 6-2 in the NEWMAC. Springfield held the shot advantage over the Blue at 10-9, while Wellesley was awarded eight penalty corners to Springfield's four.

At the 8:32 mark in the first quarter, Alex Lenart flipped in a shot from in close to boost the Blue to the first lead of the game at 1-0. Emma Wesoloski (South Deerfield, Mass.) looked to provide a spark for the Pride in the first quarter with a shot inside, however Kyra Deehr-Lewis punted out the attempt. The Blue would close out the quarter with a 1-0 advantage. Springfield would clamp down defensively in the second quarter as Lyndsey DeLasho (Croton on hudson, N.Y.) staved off the Blue attack with a pair of saves in the beginning of the second quarter. After three straight attempts coming up unsuccessful, the Pride were able to even the game as Carly Torrance (Concord, N.H.) entered the ball into a scrum off a corner and Grace Majka (Simsbury, Conn.) found the pass and swept in the score to make the score 1-1 at the 28:15 mark. The goal would send the game to the break at 1-1.

The third frame was a drought for both teams as each program stepped up defensively. DeLasho recorded another key save at 40:28, while the Blue stood up the Pride's lone shot of the quarter. With three minutes left, the Pride had a chance to take the lead as they attacked in transition, but Deehr-Lewis stepped out and defended the attack to maintain the even score. The Blue would regain the lead, at 58:46, as Cass Novello connected with Keller Gardener, who was positioned out in front of the goal and sent it a shot to the left side, which proved to be the game-winner.
