Worcester, Mass. - December 3, 2021 - The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team kicked off the first day of a the three-day Gompei Invitational hosted at WPI on Friday and delivered some strong performances.
The scoring of the meet is based on the combined results with the women's program, and Springfield is fourth among the nine institutions in the competition with 1,450 points.
Beginning with the 200 medley relay, Jordon McMillan (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago), Daniel Forsythe (East Providence, R.I.), Niko Duarte (Plymouth, Mass.), and James Chan (Hong Kong) turned in a 1:34.80 to finish in eighth place before Jonathan Chan (Hong Kong) swam a 1:58.88 and Dominic Marco (Bath, Maine) touched in 1:59.86 in the 200 IM.
Erik Jensen (Hainesport, N.J.) swam the fifth-fastest time in the 500 free with a 4:43.47, while Forsythe registered a 22.68 in the 50 free and a 2:11.90 in the 200 breast. Jonathan Chan also took fifth in the 100 fly in 51.16 and Duarte produced a 51.59.
On the one-meter board, Luca Brashear (Amherst, Mass.) was the runner-up with a total of 457.80, and teammate Sean Andrews (Framingham, Mass.) registered a 396.45 to take fourth.
To close out the evening, the Chan brothers, Marco, and Jensen swam the 800 free relay in 6:57.77 to earn second-place points for the Pride. Forsythe and Duarte also combined with women's teammates Kay Shen and Natalie Chamberlin in the 200 mixed medley relay to record a 1:42.90.
Day two of competition gets started at 9 am on Saturday with the prelims before the finals get underway at 6 pm.
