Babson Topples Women's Lacrosse in NEWMAC Championship

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - May 1, 2021 - Playing in their sixth-consecutive conference championship game, the Springfield College women's lacrosse team was upended by Babson in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship, 22-4, on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.

The Pride, which was the top seed in the tournament, lost for the first time season to slip to 4-1, while the Beavers improved to 4-1.  The NCAA Division III Championship field will be unveiled on Monday, May 3 at 10:30 am on NCAA.com.

For the game, Babson held a 30-16 advantage in shots, including 22-7 in the first half, while also winning 20 of the game's 28 draw controls.  Springfield was whistled for 26 fouls in the contest and the Beavers converted on 6-of-9 free-position attempts.

In her final game with the Pride, Kate Sarnacki (Granby, Mass.) totaled two goals and two assists to go along with a game-high four caused turnovers, while Gabby Fogg (Wells, Maine) picked up three draw controls.

Valerie Quinlan was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NEWMAC Championship as she was dominant with 12 draw controls, three assists, and a goal, while Criket Fligor totaled nine saves in goal.  Erin Jayne totaled five goals and an assist to pace the offense, which Claudia Dodge produced three goals and two assists and Sara O'Connor netted four goals.

Goals from Julia McGuire and O'Connor just 1:39 into the contest gave the visitors an early 2-0 edge, only to have Taylor Pichel (Hopkinton, Mass.) take a great inside feed from Sarnacki to make it a one-goal contest at the 27:07 mark.  O'Connor would net a free-position goal and Jayne would deliver an unassisted marker at 23:51 to push the advantage to 4-1, before Katie Martel (Hartland, Conn.) stung a shot on the run at 23:04.

From there, Babson would reel off 16-straight goals over the next 29-plus minutes as its lead ballooned to 20-2 with just under 23 minutes left in regulation.  A free-position goal from Sarnacki at 17:50 would get the Pride back in the scoring column but the Beavers had built enough of a cushion to claim the conference title with the 22-4 victory.
