Springfield, Mass. - May 8, 2021 - The Springfield College baseball team battled with nationally-ranked Babson College in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Semifinals on Saturday afternoon at Archie Allen Field. The Beavers took the first game 4-2 before holding on for an 11-8 win in the second game of the twinbill.
Springfield finishes the season with a 3-7 record while Babson, who was ranked No. 11 in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA National Poll, improves to 12-2.

Game 1 --- Babson 4, Springfield 2
Babson turned in the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning as Josh Yellen knocked in an RBI double to score Francis Kiely, who doubled on the at bat prior. After hitting a single, Thomas Lapham stole second to get into scoring position, from there, the Beavers would execute a double steal to score their second run of the inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Springfield would respond in the top of the sixth inning after a Beavers error would put the Pride's baserunners in scoring position. Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass.) would hit a sac fly to score Conor Santoianni (Stormville, N.Y.), who led off the frame with a single, to cut into the Beavers lead at 2-1.
Babson would score two runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 4-1, but Springfield would again generate a response in form of a Jack Simonetty (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) home run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 4-2. Babson would keep the Pride at bay for the remainder of the game to take the victory. Noah Bleakley (Granby, Mass.) tossed 4.2 innings and dealt seven strikeouts, while giving up two earned runs off four hits.
Game 2 --- Babson 11, Springfield 8
Babson poured in six runs in the bottom of the second to jump out to a 6-0 lead in the second game of the doubleheader, highlighted by a two-run double from Andrew Dembowski. Springfield dropped in five unanswered runs over a four-inning span to close the gap to 6-5 heading into the bottom of the eighth. The spurt started in the fifth when
Michael Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) blasted a run-scoring double and
Jack Cooney added a RBI single, before
Noah Bleakley connected on a single up the middle to score
Andrew McCarthy (Meriden, Conn.) in the seventh. The Pride took advantage of a pair of miscues by Babson in the eigth which allowed
Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.) and
Ryan Smith (Millis, Mass.) to cross the plate and make it a one-run game.
The Beavers would put together a stretch of four-straight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, which was sparked by an RBI double from Michael Cook, to push the lead to 11-5. Springfield would battle their way back scoring three in the top of the ninth, fueled by extra-base RBI from
Jack Simonetty and Traversa, but the rally would fall short as Babson advanced to the championship series.
