Worcester, Mass. - January 30, 2022 - Going up against another nationally-ranked opponent, the Springfield College men's basketball was topped by No. 17 WPI by an 83-48 margin on Sunday in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play in Harrington Auditorium. The Engineers improve to 16-2 overall, 7-1 in conference play, while the Pride fall to 5-12, 3-5 in the NEWMAC.

Four players finished in double-digits in scoring for WPI, led by 18 points, including six threes, from Kahleb Downing. John Lowther stuffed his stat sheet with 16 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, while Colin McNamara and John Adams  chipped in with 13 points each. Adams led WPI with 10 rebounds to wrap up his 10th double-double of the season.

For Springfield, Nick Bray (Hartford, Conn.) tallied 11 points, while Jacob Morales (Montvale, N.J.) finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Zeke Blauner (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) rounded out the box score with seven points.

A Downing three kicked off the scoring for the Engineers, who did not trail in the game. The first half lead grew to 15 points on a McNamara lay-up midway through the action, making it 25-10 WPI. Springfield used a 7-2 spurt, capped by a Jack Meagher (Sydney, Australia) lay-up to cut the lead to 10 with 5:31 left in the first, but the Engineers pushed the lead back to 15, closing the half with a 38-23 advantage.

Springfield got the first bucket of the second half, but WPI's offense continued to roll. Downing connected for three from long-range, as the Engineers put together a 20-6 run spanning eight minutes, opening a 27-point advantage with 12 minutes to play.  WPI's lead ballooned to as many as 37 points down the stretch as it improved to 7-1 in conference play. 

Springfield will next host MIT at 7:30 pm on Wednesday in an important NEWMAC showdown.
