Box Score New London, Conn. - October 15, 2022 - The Springfield College men's soccer program suffered a 2-0 loss on the road to Coast Guard in NEWMAC play on Saturday afternoon.
Springfield falls to 2-8-2 and 1-4 in conference play. Coast Guard, who is receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches' Division III National Poll, improves to 8-2-3 and 2-2-1 in the conference standings. The Bears edged Springfield in shots, 10-9, while it was dead even in corner kicks at five a piece.
Clayton Knibbs (Madison, Conn.) made two saves in the setback, while Josh Hudson cleared away five shots.
Coast Guard scored its first goal at the 15-minute mark as Charles Fish went unassisted to the goal to put the Bears ahead 1-0. In the 23rd-minute, Chris Cruz (Greenwich, Conn.) blasted a pair of shots on goal, but one skipped high and other was turned away by Hudson. Fish added another score for Coast Guard at 24:08 off the pass from John Flood and make the score 2-0. Springfield received a chance to cut into the deficit at 43:08 as Matthew Mela (Natick, Mass.) went low left after creating space, however was met by Hudson to keep it a two-goal advantage heading into the break.
In the second half, Springfield was able to slow the Coast Guard attack and keep the hosts' scoreless in the stanza. Only two of the Pride's four second half shots aimed on frame and each were saved by Hudson to hold off the Springfield comeback chances.
The Pride will now shift its focus to a non-conference match with Wesleyan this week.
