Field Hockey Powers Past Wheaton, 4-0

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - October 4, 2022 - The Springfield College field hockey team earned its first conference win of the season as it cruised past Wheaton, 4-0, on Tuesday night on Stagg Field in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.

The Pride improved to 4-6, 1-2 in conference play as it produced consecutive shutout victories for the first time since September 21, 2019.  The Lyons dropped to 2-9, 0-3 against conference opponents.

Audrey Bresciano (Greenfield, Mass.) totaled two goals and an assist to pace the offense as Springfield controlled much of the play with a 13-3 edge in shots.  Remy Niland (Marshfield, Mass.) made three saves, while Emma Lapreziosa was credited with five stops for the Lyons.

After the majority of the first quarter was played between the 20-yard lines, Springfield broke through for the game's first goal at the 14:21 mark.  Off a restart, Emma Robinson (Wilbraham, Mass.) was able to deliver a centering pass which Audrey Dolan (Westminster, Mass.) was able to redirect towards the end line.  Bresciano ran onto the ball and sent a low-angle shot towards the cage that Claire Munkacsi (Gorham, Maine) jammed over the goal line for her first career goal.

Springfield tacked on another goal in the 27th minute after Molly Collins (Franklin, Mass.) blasted a drive from the 35-yard line, which Kalista Fontanella (Avon, Conn.) was able to get her stick on and redirect the ball towards the cage.  Bresciano then delivered for the Pride as she backhanded a bid along the goal line that went five-hole on Lapreziosa two give the hosts a two-goal advantage heading into the halftime break.

The Pride struck again just over a minute into the third quarter as Fontanella beat her defender to the endline and delivered a centering pass that Bresciano was able to collect, turn, and fire a shot into the bottom left corner of the cage for her second marker of the game.  Springfield's final goal of the contest came in the 58th minute when Dolan connected with Camryn Morano (Middleboro, Mass.), who blistered a reverse sweep into the back of the cage.

On Saturday, Springfield will take on another nationally-ranked opponent as it travels to Babson for a 12 pm game.
