Cambridge, Mass. - February 17, 2022 - The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team began the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on Thursday night at MIT and their efforts were highlighted by a new program record.
The Pride sit in fourth place after the first night of competition as it totaled 52 points in the seven-team field.
In the lone swimming event of the first night of the championships, the team of Jonathan Chan (Hong Kong), James Chan (Hong Kong), Erik Jensen (Hainesport, N.J.), and Dominic Marco (Bath, Maine) swam the fastest 800 free relay in Springfield College men's swimming history as they turned in a time of 6:46.04 to finish in fourth. The time smashed the previous record of 6:50.17 that was established in 2020, and James Chan highlighted tonight's record race turning in a split of 1:40.01.
Springfield had a strong showing on the three-meter board as the Pride had three of the top four finishers. Luca Brashear (Amherst, Mass.) earned NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team honors as he took runner-up honors with a 514.80, while Kaleb Osborne (Longmeadow, Mass.) delivered a 470.40 en route to a third-place finish in his first conference championship appearance. Teammate Sean Andrews (Framingham, Mass.) took fourth following his mark of 456.35.
Second day action of the championships get underway on Friday with prelims at 10 am.
