Box Score Springfield, Mass. - February 19, 2022 - The Springfield College men's basketball program produced a season-high in points en route to a 91-81 win over Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season finale on Saturday afternoon.
Springfield closes the season with a 6-17 record, while Coast Guard bows out at 5-18. Springfield went 46.5% from the floor on 33-of-71 shooting and turned 14 turnovers into 18 fast break points.
The Pride had a balanced attack with five players scoring in double figures. Daryl Costa (Providence, R.I.) gave a career-best effort with 28 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Collin Lindsay (East Longmeadow, Mass.) added a 19-point, 12-rebound double-double and Jacob Morales (Montvale, N.J.) contributed 14 points, nine rebounds, and four assists in 35 minutes of action.
Tyler Perez led the Bears with 25 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the floor with Madison Maloney contributing 16 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
Springfield fought to a 19-17 advantage with 14:13 remaining in the first after back-to-back threes from Costa and Lindsay gave Springfield the lead. The Bears would outscore Springfield 12-6 over the next six minutes to take a 29-24 lead as Abe Countryman tipped in a miss for Coast Guard at 8:39. Coast Guard took its largest lead of the half at 5:35 as Jack Brunswick canned a three off the pass from Garrett Drummond to make the score 38-33. The Pride would tie the game at 41-41 as another Lindsay three at the 2:17 mark would cap off a 8-3 run. After a Declan Rooney bucket, Springfield would tie the game once more before the half as Linsay would knock a pair down to go into the break knotted at 43-43.
Coming out of the half, Coast Guard was able to build a 55-50 lead after another Rooney jumper with 16:38 to play in the half. Springfield would take the lead back courtesy of a 12-4 run that led by the play of Zeke Blauner (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) as the sophomore guard scored six points over the stretch to bring the lead to 62-59 with 13 minutes to go. Springfield and Coast Guard continued to trade buckets as the each team never took a lead greater than four over the following 10 minutes. At 3:35, Costa created space and drilled a wing three to give Springfield a 82-75 lead. The Bears would attempt to cut into the lead as Perez got into the passing lane to create an easy bucket and make the score 85-78, however, Lindsay would bury a three from out front with 1:55 to go giving Springfield a 85-78 cushion that eventually led to a 91-81 victory.
