Cambridge, Mass. - February 23, 2020 - The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team placed fourth at the 2022 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships, which concluded on Sunday night at MIT.
MIT claimed its 13th consecutive title and produced 1635 points as it outdistanced Coast Guard's second-place score of 973. WPI finished third (830), followed by Springfield (640), Babson (619), Wheaton (390), and Clark (296). For the Pride, it marked the second-straight NEWMAC Championship that it placed fourth.
Erik Jensen (Hainesport, N.J.) put together a record-breaking performance in the 1,650 freestyle as he finished fourth in 16:12.97 in what would be the fastest time in the history of the event in Springfield College men's swimming and diving history. Dan Moran set the previous record of 16:17.88 in 2006 and was one of the oldest records in program history that was held by a single individual.
In the 200 back, Owen Oldenburg (East Longmeadow, Mass.) raced a 1:57.99 and Jonathan Chan (Hong Kong) completed the 100 free in 46.80. Antonio Anastasiades (Wakefield, Mass.) completed the 200 breast in 2:04.30 en route to a fifth-place finish. James Chan (Hong Kong) recorded a 1:50.94 in the 200 fly for fifth-place points, while Jensen turned in 1:54.29 for seventh in the same event.
To wrap up the championship, the 400 free relay team of Jonathan Chan, Jordon McMillan (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago), Dominic Marco (Bath, Maine), James Chan raced to a third-place time of 3:05.34.
