Box Score Auburndale, Fla. - March 19, 2022 - The Springfield College baseball team closed out its Spring Break trip to Florida with a 13-9 victory over Worcester State on Saturday afternoon.
The Pride was able to snap its five-game skid to improve to 4-9 on the year as it totaled 16 hits in the win. Six players had at least two hits, with Andrew McCarty (Meriden, Conn.) producing three hits and Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) totaling four RBI. Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.), Noah Bleakley (Granby, Mass.), and McCarty each crossed home plate three times and Matthew Robinson (Fairfield, Conn.) earned the win in relief as he tossed 2.2 scoreless innings.
Springfield struck first, getting a sacrifice fly from Sorgi in the first inning to go up 1-0, only to have the Lancers answer with four runs in the bottom half to take control early. The Pride tied things up in the fourth, as Noah Diamond (Glastonbury, Conn.) ripped a single to center with the bases loaded to score a pair before another sacrifice fly from Sorgi made it a 4-4 game. However, Worcester State responded with three runs of their own in the inning, registering five hits to regain a 7-4 cushion.
With runners on the corners in the fifth, Luke DiMauro (Haddam, Conn.) singled in McCarty and Springfield would take the lead for good in the fifth as it scored four times. The inning was highlighted by Sorgi stepping up with the bases loaded and driving in three runs with a double down the line. A run-scoring single by McCarty and two-run shot from Bleakley in the eighth gave the Pride a 12-8 cushion as Springfield would hold on for the 13-9 non-conference win.
Springfield will hosts Elms on Thursday at 3 pm.
