Box Score Springfield, Mass. - March 24, 2022 - The Springfield College women's lacrosse program dropped a non-conference battle to Trinity College, 15-9, on Thursday afternoon at Stagg Field.
Springfield sits a 3-4 thus far this season. The Bantams, who entered the contest ranked No. 18 in IWLCA Division III National Poll, improve to 4-2.
Jade O'Connor (Baltimore, Md.) was carried the offensive attack for Springfield registering a season-best five goals for Springfield, while Katie Martel (Hartland, Conn.) pitched in a hat trick. Haley Moody (Wells, Maine) held strong in the cage saving 12 shots in the setback.
Christine Taylor tallied six goals for Trinity with Lily Ives adding a three goals and Elle Kilpatrick contributed three goals with three helpers.
O'Connor scored Springfield's first goal of the contest after receiving a feed from Maddie Roy (Wilbraham, Mass.) and slicing through the defense to tie the game at 1-1. The Pride eventually took a 3-2 lead as O'Connor scored on a free postion attempt with 14 seconds left in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Trinity rattled off a pair of goals from Christine Taylor and Ives to regain a 4-3 lead over the Pride with 7:19 to go. At 5:49, O'Connor found the gap in the defense again and scored to tie the game at 4-4. The Bantams closed the half with three-straight goals as Lily Ives connected with Samantha Booma with 20 seconds left, on the give and go to help Trinity pull ahead 7-4 at the break.
The Bantams continued the scoring spurt in the beginning of the third quarter with two more goals, which brought the lead to 9-4. The Pride dipped into the Bantams' lead as O'Connor continued to attack the defense and draw scoring opportunities. The graduate student scored on back-to-back free positions to make the score 9-6 with 4:02 remaining in the third. Another goal at the end of the quarter for Trinity would push its lead back up to 10-6 with one frame to go.
Springfield would pull within in two goals after Martel canned two-straight free position goals for the Pride to make it a 10-8 game with 11:58 remaining in the game. Trinity responded with another scoring spurt of five goals over the following 10 minutes to take a 15-8 lead, before Taylor Pichel (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored a late goal in traffic to make it 15-9, but Trinity was able to hold on for the win.
Springfield will host Smith College on Saturday, March 26 at 12:00.
