Women's Lacrosse Powers Past Smith

Springfield, Mass. - March 26, 2022 - The Springfield College women's lacrosse program defeated Smith College, 20-7, on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. 

Springfield improves to 4-3 on the season and remains perfect in conference play. Smith drops to 4-4 and 1-1 in the NEWMAC league standings. 

 Nine different players scored for Springfield in the contest. Anjelia Altebrando (Miller Place, N.Y.) and Taylor Pichel (Hopkinton, Mass.) registered a team-high four goals while Jade O'Connor (Baltimore, Md.) contributed a hat trick. Arielle Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) dished six assists to help facilitate the offense for Springfield. Gianna Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) earned four draws and four ground balls. As a team, the Pride totaled 44 shots, won the ground ball battle 14-12, and won 23 draws on the game. 

 Jennie Arancio scored four goals for the Pioneers, while Sadie Tschider posted three goals in the setback.

Springfield sparked its offense at 14:20 as Johnson found Pichel across the middle for the first score of the game, then, O'Connor added two-straight goals for Springfield to give the Pride a 3-0 lead with 11:15 left in the quarter. The Pioneers would get on the board at the 10:47 mark as Sadie Tschnider scored on an unassisted strike to make it 3-1. The Pride would rattle off four unanswered highlighted by a pair of goals from Hayley Byers (Milford, Conn.) to push its lead to 7-1 with 9:26 to play in the first frame. Jennie Arancio helped Smith cut into the Springfield advantage with two consecutive goals to make it a 7-3 score with 5:27 remaining. 

The Pride put four unanswered goals to start the second quarter as Pichel added a pair in the scoring span, which was capped off by Roy making a strong move to the cage at 9:22 to help Springfield improve its lead to 12-3. The Pioneers recieved goals from Tschider and Arancio, which pulled the deficit to 12-5, however the Pride finished the game on an 8-2 scoring run, capped off by a Lyndsey DeLasho (Croton on Hudson, N.Y.) strike to give Springfield its season-high in goals. 

Springfield travels to Westfield on Wednesday for a 6:00 non-conference game.
