Box Score Hartford, Conn. - March 30, 2022 - The Springfield College baseball team erupted for 23 runs off 23 hits as it cruised to a 23-12 victory over the Trinity College Bantams on Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium on Wednesday.
Trinity, playing in its first game back in New England after spending last week in Florida, falls to 6-5. The Pride improves to 7-10 with its third-straight victory.
Springfield scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back, pounding 23 hits and scoring in seven different frames. The Bantams cut the Pride's early lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the second inning, only to have Springfield erupt for eight more runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a two-run double by Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.), who had two hits in the inning.
The Bantams answered again with six runs in the bottom of the third to make the score, 12-8, one third of the way through the contest.
Jack Simonetty (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) added a run-scoring double in the fourth and Springfield tacked on three in the fifth, thanks to a two-run double by Joe Penkala (Warren, R.I.) as Springfield doubled up the Bantams, 16-8. The teams would combine for 11 more runs, including seven by Springfield, with Noah Bleakley (Granby, Conn.) producing a solo homer as part of the scoring burst in the sixth inning.
Jack DeGirolamo (Newington, Conn.) improved to 2-0 for Springfield with five outs of scoreless work in relief. Simonetty was 5-for-7 with two runs and three RBI for the Pride, while Sorgi drove in five runs, Bleakley scored six times, and Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.) went 4-for-4 with four runs.
Springfield hosts Dean tomorrow at 4 p.m.
