Box Score 2 Springfield, Mass. - March 6, 2022 - The Springfield College baseball team was upended in a doubleheader by Westfield State on Sunday at Archie Allen Field. The Pride lost the opener, 7-2, and was toppled in the second game, 9-5.
Springfield is scheduled to take on Nichols on Monday at 3 pm.

The visitors scored the final five runs of the game to pull away with a 7-2 victory in the first game of the doubleheader. Springfield struck for the game's first run in the bottom of the second as Cole Zalegowski (North Haven, Conn.) led off with a single before Joe Penkala (Warren, R.I.) ripped a run-scoring triple to center.
With two outs in the third, Nick Marshall was hit by a pitch and stole second to get into scoring position. Max Silverman then ripped a two-run homer to give the Owls a 2-1 advantage. Springfield responded in the bottom of the fifth, as Andrew McCarty (Meriden, Conn.) led off the frame with a solo shot to right.
Westfield State went ahead for good in the sixth, registering back-to-back doubles with Silverman driving in another run before the Owls benefitted from a Pride fielding error to make it a 4-2 game. In the seventh, Westfield State again struck with two outs, getting three runs off a pair of singles en route to the win.
Michael White (Granby, Conn.) put together a strong outing on the mound for the Pride, going five innings, surrendering two earned runs off three hits while striking out six.

The Owls jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening inning, as a leadoff walk from Nick Martin resulted in Casey Boudreau connecting on a RBI triple before Nick Marshall manufactured a sacrifice fly for the game's second run. Springfield was able to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first, as Michael Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) earned a walk to start of the inning and later scored on a fielding error by Westfield State.
Westfield State added three runs in the third and another in the fourth to push their lead to 6-1, but the Pride answered with two in the bottom half, getting a solo homer from Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) and a run-scoring base knock by Cole Zalegowski. The visitors added a home run of their own to start the fifth off the bat of Marshall and delivered a two-run roundtripper from Martin in the sixth.
Springfield was able to scratch out two runs in the bottom of the seventh, as Cole Crynock (Broad Brook, Conn.) ripped a two-out double to complete the scoring in the 9-5 loss.
