Box Score

Cambridge, Mass. - April 12, 2022 - The Springfield College baseball program withstood a late surge from MIT and earned a 9-7 victory over the Engineers on Tuesday evening at Fran O'Brien Field in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.

Springfield improves to 10-14 and 3-3 in the conference. MIT falls to 7-13-1 and 2-4 in the NEWMAC standings.

Springfield came out early with a 3-0 lead after the first as the Engineers walked four Springfield batters in the inning. Sonandres would kick things off in the bottom of the first with a double and later score off a single from Finch to dip into the Springfield lead at 3-1. The Pride expanded its lead to 5-1 after the second off a sacrifice fly from Cadin Maynard (Wateford, Conn.)

The Engineers crawled back with a pair of runs in the third to make it a 5-3 game after Aiello hit one on the ground to bring in Sonandres. The bases were loaded with two outs and Caverly recorded a strikeout to end the inning and strand the Engineers' go ahead run. Sonandres continued to show up for the Engineers with an RBI single in the fourth to make it 5-4.

Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) helped separate Springfield from the hosts as the sophomore blasted a shot over the center field fence to put the Pride up 6-4. Springfield held its lead into the eighth, however, the Pride surrendered two RBI hits after giving up three-straight walks, which gave the Engineers the 7-6 lead.

In the top of the ninth, Springfield found itself with the bases loaded with two outs and Noah Diamond (Glastonbury, Conn.) delivered a double to right that bounced away from the outfielder and allowed three runs to score for Springfield to put the Pride up 9-7. Noah Bleakley (Granby, Mass.) put away three-straight batters in the bottom of the frame to complete the hard fought conference victory.

The Pride welcome Elms to Archie Allen tomorrow at 3:30.
