Box Score Springfield, Mass. - April 15, 2022 - The Springfield College baseball program stormed past WPI, 13-1, in seven innings on Friday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) at Archie Allen Field.
Springfield has won five of its last six games and improves to 12-14 on the season.
Colby Welch (Brandon, Fla.) earned the win on the mound after going six innings with only one run allowed and five strikeouts. Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) went 3-for-3 with five RBIs to pace the Springfield bats. Cadin Maynard (Waterford, Conn.) contributed a pair of hits and three RBIs.
The Pride got off to a hot start scoring seven runs over the first three innings. Sorgi brought in a pair in the first inning with a double to left and singled again in the bottom of the second to bring in two more for Springfield to make it a 5-0 game. Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass.) scored Sorgi at the next at bat with a double to right field to enhance the Pride's lead to 6-0. In the bottom of the third, Noah Diamond (Glastonbury, Conn.) came around to score off a sacrifice fly from Maynard, which put Springfield ahead 7-0.
The Engineers ended its scoring drought in the fourth as Johnson homered to left field to put a run up on the board for the visitors, however, Springfield would tack on six runs in the bottom of the fourth to open up the lead to 13-1 after putting up five hits in the inning, including an RBI triple from Cooney. Springfield would control its lead through the seventh inning as the Engineers could not rally the bats to overcome the Pride's strong lead allowing for Springfield to take the victory.
Springfield will travel to Worcester to take WPI again in doubleheader action tomorrow at 12:00 and 3:00.
