Box Score Springfield, Mass. - April 16, 2022 - The Springfield College women's lacrosse program fell to MIT, 15-9, in a New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) battle on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.
Springfield suffers its first conference loss of the season and is now 9-5 overall. MIT is 8-4 and 5-1 in NEWMAC play.
Katie Martel (Hartland, Conn.) produced four goals for Springfield, while Taylor Pichel (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Jade O'Connor (Baltimore, Md.) cashed in two goals a piece in the setback. Haley Moody (Wells, Maine) turned away eight shots. Katie Campbell (Somers, Conn.) won eight draws to help the Pride win the draw battle, 15-13.
Ellie Rabenold scored six goals to lead the Engineers and Elena Boal registered nine saves between the pipes.
The Engineers raced out to a 4-1 after Rabenold dished to Katie Hall for the score with 4:30 to play in the quarter. Maddie Roy (Wilbraham, Mass.) drilled a free position to make 4-2 with 3:16 remaining. Rabenold stuck a back handed goal for the Engineers at 2:01, however, O'Connor took a feed from Arielle Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) down the middle to score with just about a minute to play putting the score at 5-3.
The Engineers went up 7-3 after goals from Rabenold and Arterburn, but the Pride would bring back within 7-5 as Pichel scored back-to-back goals. A late goal from Lindsey Gambino beofre the half put the gap back to three goals at 8-5. After an MIT goal just 30 seconds into the third to go up 9-5, O'Connor spun off a defender to score, then Martel stuck another free position shot to bring the deficit to 9-7. Following the Martle score, MIT outscored Springfield 6-2 to finish off the game and hand the Pride its first conference loss of the season.
Springfield will host Wellesley on Wednesday, April 20 at 6:00.
