Baseball Falls To Babson In NEWMAC-Opening Doubleheader

Babson Park, Mass. - April 2, 2022 - The Springfield College baseball program was swept by Babson College in its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) lidlifter on Saturday. The Beavers took the opener, 8-1, before besting the Pride by a 14-0 margin in the second game.

Springfield slipped to 7-13, 0-2 with the setbacks. 

Springfield will host MIT on Tuesday, April 5 at 3:30.

Babson 8, Springfield 1 - Game One

Blake Roberge (Warwick, R.I.) got the start on the mound for the Pride and struck out six over 3.2 innings. Cadin Maynard (Waterford, Conn.) went 3-3 with a double, while Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.) also contributed two hits, highlighted by a triple in the top of the eighth. 

The Beavers scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second off an RBI double to right center to help the hosts go up 1-0. Babson scored another run in the bottom of the third, before posting a five-run inning in the bottom of the fourth to jump out to a 7-0 lead over Springfield. Following the five-run inning, Springfield held the Beavers' hitless through the nexxt  three innings. Jack DeGirolamo (Newington, Conn.) served 2.1 innings and allowed one hit and three strikouts for the Pride over the stretch.

Springfield knocked three-straight base hits in the top of the seventh to gain momentum, but couldn't scratch out a run. Babson added one more in the eight inning to go up 8-0. Springfield scored a run in the top of the eighth after Traversa piped a triple down the line to get into scoring position and was brought home by a Jack Simonetty (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) single. Maynard added another hit in the top of the ninth with Andrew McCarty (Meriden, Conn.) landed a single in an attempt to kick start a potential rally, however a double play ended the game handing the Beavers the win.  

Babson 14, Springfield 0 - Game Two

In the second game, Springfield managed just three hits as the Beavers jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the opening three innings pulled away for the conference sweep. 

A run-scoring double and sacrifice fly allowed Babson to earn a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Two more runs came across with another double in the third and then a single to center to stretch the margin to 5-0.

The Beavers added single runs in the fourth and fifth, two runs in both the sixth and seventh, and a three spot in the eighth closed out the scoring. Matthew Robinson (Fairfield, Conn.), one of four pitchers used by Springfield, shouldered the loss after giving up four runs over the first two innings.
