Box Score Springfield, Mass. - April 22, 2022 - The Springfield College baseball program delivered a 10-9 win over Clark in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Friday afternoon at Archie Allen Field.
The Pride improve to 15-16 and 7-4 in NEWMAC play. Springfield will continue its weekend series with Clark tomorrow with a doubleheader.
Colby Welch (Brandon, Fla.) threw six innings for Springfield on the mound and only gave up one run and three strikeouts to earn the victory.
The Pride ran out to a 6-1 lead after fourth inning with three runs coming each of the third and fourth innings. In the third, Jack Simonetty (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) hit a triple to the gap in left to score two runs for Springfield, and was brought home by an infield single from Cadin Maynard (Waterford, Conn.) to let Springield take a 3-1 lead after the third. The fourth inning brought three more runs for Springfield as Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass.) led off with a hit and later stole third, before being brought home on a Joe Penkala (Warren, R.I.) single. Simonetty connected on another two-RBI single later in the inning to inflate the lead to 6-1 for Springfield.
The Pride's lead improved to 10-1 in the sixth highlighted by a ground rule double by Noah Bleakely (Granby, Mass.) and then a single from Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) tacked on two more in bottom of the sixth for Springfield add to the lead. Clark turned in its second run of the game in the seventh to make it 10-2, before putting together a six-run performance in the eighth inning with four walks and three hits to close in on Springfield at 10-8.
In the top of the ninth, Bleakely came to the mound to pitch produced two quick outs, but Belt homered over the left field fence to bring it to 10-9, but Bleakely stepped up big and delivered a strike out at the next at bat to close the game.
