Women's Lacrosse Rolls Past Wheaton

Norton, Mass. - April 23, 2022- The Springfield College women's lacrosse program stormed past Wheaton, 20-4, on Saturday afternoon at Nordin Field in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. 

The Pride improves to 11-5 and 7-1 in the NEWMAC, while Wheaton falls to 9-7 overall with a 4-4 conference record. 

Katie Martel (Hartland, Conn.) was outstanding for Springfield in the victory as the senior scored a career-high seven goals. Taylor Pichel (Hopkinton, Mass.) pitched in three goals, while three student-athletes finished with a pair of goals for the Pride. Katie Campbell (Somers, N.Y.) led Springfield with six draws and Haley Moody (Wells, Maine) made six saves en route to the keeper's eighth win of the season. Springfield put 26 shots on goal of its 39 and won 19 draws.

Darien Webb tallied two points in the setback for Wheaton. 

Springfield raced out to an 8-1 lead after scoring the eight unanswered goals up to the 12:45 mark of the second quarter. Pichel and Martel each scored three goals in the early scoring stretch for the Pride. At 6:19, Brooke Harvey scored to help Wheaton chip away at the lead and make the score 9-2, but the Pride would can three more goals before the half with Lilly Vey (Foxboro, Mass.) scoring with 58 seconds left to help Springfield take a 12-2 lead at the half. 

The Pride continued to roll in the third with five goals to add to its lead at 17-2. Wheaton started off the fourth with a goal from Darien Webb, however, the Pride tacked three more to its lead as Abby Taylor (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) scored at 4:48, Martel at 3:37, and finally at 2:09, Anjelia Altebrando (Miller Place, N.Y.) capped off the scoring output for Springfield and allowed the Pride to cruise to the 20-4 win. 

Springfield will travel to Coast Guard on Wednesday for the regular season finale at 7:00.
