Box Score Springfield, Mass. - April 5, 2022 - The Springfield College baseball program dfeated MIT, 17-5, in seven innings on Tuesday afternoon at Archie Allen Field in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.
Springfield earns its first NEWMAC win of the season with the victory, MIT remains 5-12-1 and 0-3 in league play.
The Pride jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning after Andrew McCarty (Meriden, Conn.) worked his way to third only to have Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.) bring him in off a RBI single. Cadin Maynard (Waterford, Conn.) capped off the scoring in the inning with a double off the wall in left field, which scored Traversa and gave Springfield the 5-1 advantage. Springfield tacked on two more in the fifth off an error in the outfield and made the score 7-1.
Both teams came alive in the sixth as they totaled nine combined runs. Gumbs gave the Engineers an RBI single with two outs, before Sonandres homered to left and scored three runs for MIT, which gave the Pride just a 7-5 lead. Springfield responded with five runs in the fifth to assert a 12-5 lead over the Engineers, highlighted by a Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) RBI double to center field. In the top of the seventh, Jack DeGirolamo (Newington, Conn.) only gave up one hit in the inning to move the game to the bottom of the seventh. Springfield gained added insurance in the frame as Noah Bleakely (Granby, Mass.) landed an RBI triple to left and Sorgi added another single for the Pride to let Springfield cruise to the 17-5 victory.
