Women's Lacrosse Defeats Western New England To Cap Off Non-Conference Play

Springfield, Mass. - April 7, 2022 - The Springfield College women's lacrosse team raced past Western New England, 17-5, at Stagg Field on Thursday evening in non-conference action. 

Springfield improves to 7-4 on the season and the Golden Bears drop to 7-3. As a team, Springfield edged Western New England in draw controls, 14-12, scooped up 23 ground balls, and out shot the visitors, 29-27. The Pride held the Golden Bears just five goals, which is tied for its lowest total this season. 

Katie Campbell (Somers, N.Y.) put forth an outstanding performance for the Pride as the graduate student posted a career-high five goals along with an assist and three draw controls. Lilly Vey (Foxboro, Mass.) tossed in four scores, while three student-athletes each had two goals for the Pride offensively. Gianna Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) won eight draws for the Springfield and Hannah Hibbert (Center Harbor, N.H.) had six ground balls and four caused turnovers. Emily McDermott (Marshfield, Mass.) and Colleen Browne (Westford, Mass.) split time in net and combined for 11 saves in the victory. 

Liz Mazza was the leading scorer for the Golden Bears, while Sam Vitka added a score and an assist. 

With 3:57 to go in the first quarter, Springfield and Western New England battled out to a 2-2 tie as Mazza sprinted to the right for the iso goal to tie the game. At 2:38, Holly Rivers (Danbury, Conn.) would sink a free-position shot that would give the Pride the 3-2 advantage going into the second quarter. Springfield would carry its lead up three scores after solo goal from Campbell, before Arielle Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) snuck in a pass to a cutting Lauren Ronai (Orange, Conn.) to put the Pride up 5-2 with 9:24 left in the quarter. Hannah Jarvis dipped into the Springfield lead at the 3:57 mark with an unassisted score, however, Campbell and Rivers would each score before the half to put Springfield up 7-3.

In the third quarter, Springfield rattled off five-unanswered goals to bring its lead up to 12-3 with 7:33 to play in the frame, with Campbell scoring twice in the stretch. Mazza put a stop to the run with an unassisted goal at 5:18 and the Golden Bears capitalized on an advantage situation with 3:07 to go to make it a 12-5 game, before the fourth quarter. 

Springfield closed out the game with another five-goal burst with three coming from Vey and two being scored by Anjelia Altebrando (Miller Place, N.Y.) to cap off the 17-5 win for the Pride. 

The Pride travel to Emerson on Saturday for a 4:00 NEWMAC matchup.
