Box Score Springfield, Mass. - May 6, 2022 - The Springfield College baseball program fell to Babson, 7-1, in the New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Baseball Championship Tournament on Friday afternoon at Archie Allen Field.
Springfield will shift its focus to the bottom part of the bracket as the Pride will take on MIT tomorrow at 12:00 at Wheaton.
Blake Roberge (Warwick, R.I.) and Jack DeGirolamo (Newington, Conn.) split time on the mound and combined for four strikeouts in the setback.
Babson began the game with a lead off double from Lapham and later was brought in as Yellen hit a single to right field to get things going for the visitors and put the Beavers ahead 1-0. The Pride responded in the bottom of the frame with three-straight hits, including a double that toed the left field line from Jack Simonetty (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.). However, Springfield would leave all three runners on base as the Beavers forced three consecutive outs.
Neither team could produce runs through the fourth inning keeping the game at a one-run margin, then, the Beavers scored three in the top of the fifth highlighted by a two-run shot over the center field wall by Santos, pushing the score to 4-0.
In the top of the sixth, Springfield was able to hold off more runs from the Beavers as Noah Bleakley (Granby, Mass.) finished off a double play with a throw to plate to tag out Yellen. In the bottom of the inning, Springfield edged into the deficit with ground rule doubles from Cadin Maynard (Waterford, Conn.) and Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) to make it 4-1.
Babson tallied one run in the seventh courtesy of an RBI triple, before a two run homer in the top of the ninth put the score at 7-1 and the game out of reach for a potential Springfield comeback in the NEWMAC Championship Tournament opening game.
