Baseball Comes Up Short In NEWMAC Tournament With Loss Against MIT

Box Score

Norton, Mass. - May 7, 2022 - The Springfield College baseball program closed out its season with a 2-1 loss against MIT on Saturday afternoon in the second day of the New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Baseball Championship Tournament hosted by Wheaton College.

Springfield finishes the 2022 campaign with a 19-20 record.

The Engineers earned the first lead of the game in the top of the second inning as Reed Tubbs knocked down a single through the left side that brought around a runner to give MIT the 1-0 advantage. Later, in the fourth inning, Tubbs helped MIT double up its lead with lead off double that was later scored by a single up the middle to put the game at a 2-0 score.

The Pride sliced in the lead in the bottom of the eighth with a lead off single from Michael Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Barrett later came through off a Noah Bleakley (Granby, Mass.) base hit to make it 2-1. The Pride had a chance to take the lead with the bases loaded with two outs, however, the Engineers go out of the jam and maintain its one-run edge. After Bleakley buried two strikeouts in the top of the ninth and left one runner on, the Pride had one final opportunity in the bottom of the ninth, but came up short to close the game.
