No. 5 Trinity Holds Off Field Hockey

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - September 21, 2022 - The Springfield College field hockey team was defeated by nationally-ranked Trinity, 6-0, in non-conference play on Wednesday night on Stagg Field.

The Bantams, who were ranked fifth in the most recent NFHCA National Poll, improved to 6-0, while Springfield's record dipped to 2-4 with the loss.

Remy Niland (Marshfield, Mass.) was tremendous between the pipes for Springfield and finished the game with 19 saves, which was the 10th-highest single game total across the NCAA Division III landscape this season.  The Bantams finished the game with a 29-2 advantage in shots and an 11-1 edge in penalty corners.

Trinity controlled much of the play in the first half, jumping out to a 3-0 advantage following 30 minutes of play.  Despite being outshot by an 18-1 margin, Springfield benefitted from some tremendous goaltending by Niland, as she was credited with 13 saves in the half.  Just over nine minutes into the contest, Niland made a sprawling save on a penalty stroke to keep the Bantams off the scoreboard.  The visitors would finally break through with 2:30 left in the opening quarter when Caelin Flaherty jammed in her own rebound for the game's first goal.

Flaherty would tack on her second of the game in the 20th minute as Riley Nichols delivered a centering pass off a penalty corner that Flaherty was able to collect and rip a reverse sweep from 10 yards out just past Niland.  Trinity added its third goal of the half less than two minutes later on another penalty corner, as Flaherty connected with Izzy Deveney, whose bid deflected off Niland's hand and crossed the goal line.

In the 37th minute, Trinity was able to take advantage of a transition opportunity, and Katrina Winfield found Jackie Frank as the trailer on the break as she converted a strike for a goal.  Deveney scored the for the second time in the contest at 41:30 when she collected a rebound to score the visitors fifth of the game.  In the 60th minute, a hard drive from straightaway by Harper Siemens off another corner concluded the scoring.

Springfield returns to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) on Saturday when it travels to MIT.
