Box Score Worcester, Mass. – October 14, 2023 – The Springfield College men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 final to WPI in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tilt at Alumni Stadium.
With three games to play in the regular season, Springfield now sits at 4-5-4 overall and 1-2-2 in the NEWMAC (5 points), while WPI improved to 4-4-6 (3-1-1 NEWMAC – 10 points).
Just 13:44 into the matchup, Luke Savoie put WPI ahead 1-0 with his first goal of the season as he finished a pass from Anthony Previte that originally deflected off a Springfield defender. The score would remain the same until early in the second half when Francesco Valagussa ripped a shot from 25 yards out off a short pass from Previte for his fourth tally of the year.
WPI was awarded a penalty kick in the 70th minute that was converted by Aaron Vaz to account for the the Engineers third goal of the contest. Springfield finally broke through and avoided the shutout today as senior Chris Cruz (Greenwich, Conn.) headed home his team-leading fourth goal of the year after recieving the ball inside the box from the far side of the field via first-year Connor Policarpio (Bristol, Conn.) with 3:04 to play in the game.
Pride keeper Noah Pote (Washington, Conn.) made six stops on nine shots faced today as his record slipped to 4-5-4 this year.
Springfield will host Babson College in another NEWMAC contest on Wednesday, October 18 at 5:00 pm on Brock-Affleck Field.
