Springfield, Mass. - November 18, 2023 - The Springfield College wrestling team finished second among the 18-team field at the Doug Parker Invitational on Saturday in the Springfield College Field House.
The Pride finished the afternoon with 117.5 points, trailing on Coast Guard, who posted 162.5 points to win the team title. Springfield outdistanced Wilkes, who placed third with 109 points.
Jacob Deguire (Schenectady, N.Y.) won his second tournament of the 2023 campaign at 174 points as he was dominant on the day. The junior began his day with three-consecutive pinfalls, all of which came inside the opening minute of competition, before he outlasted Joe Chapman from Coast Guard by a 13-10 decision in the finals.
Springfield also had an individual title at 125 pounds thanks to the efforts of Isiac Paulino (Athol, Mass.). The sophomore had two decisions to start off his tournament, before a second-round pin in the semifinals and an 11-3 major decision versus Fred Luchs of RIC landed him on top of the podium.
A trio of Springfield wrestlers also finished third on the day, as Myles Leonard (Waldwick, N.J.), Gianni Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.), and Jack Callahan (Tewksbury, Mass.) all finished their days with wins in the third-place bout. Callahan went 3-1 on the day at 125, with a first-period pin versus Delaware Valley's Malik Asfour capping off his afternoon, while Manginelli bounced back from a semifinal loss with an 8-1 decision against Southern Maine's Jake Craig to close out his day at 4-1 at 133 pounds. Leonard had four pinfalls, including three in the first period, as he took third at 165, and ended his tournament with a pin of WNE's Sean Monteiro in 2:46.
The Pride's other placer was Nicholas Rogers (Watertown, N.Y.), who took fifth at 197 pounds.
Springfield will next wrestle in the Petrofes Invitational on December 1-2 in Pennsylvania.
