Box Score Springfield, Mass. - February 15, 2023 - The Springfield College men's basketball team was clipped by Clark, 84-76, in its home finale on Wednesday night in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) clash.
With the loss, Springfield is now 6-18, 3-10 in conference and Clark boosted its record to 14-10, 6-7.
Panayiotis Kapanides (Bedford, Mass.) led the Pride with 15 points and Daryl Costa (Providence, R.I.) added 14 points and four assists in his final game in Blake Arena. Zach Falkenburg (Bridgeport, N.Y.) contributed 11 points and Josh Hartley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) delivered 10 points and six rebounds. For the visitors, Bruce Saintilus netted a game-high 18 points, Jordan Richard scored 17 off the bench, Kekoa McArdle totaled 15 points and Isaiah Taylor stuffed his stat sheet with nine points, nine assists, and seven caroms.
Clark would extend an early 14-8 advantage at the 14:53 mark when McArdle converted down low, only to have Springfield cut it to a 19-17 deficit when Hartley pulled up for a baseline jumper at 9:55 Reid Neumann would respond with back-to-back triples to push the visitors lead back to 25-17 and the Cougars would maintain an eight-point edge with 4:50 remaining following a trifecta by Taylor that made it 35-27. Springfield would respond with a 9-3 surge as Costa finished at the rim at 2:08 to make it a one-possession game. After Clark answered back to own a 42-36 edge with just under two minutes to play, Springfield closed out the half on a 8-0 run, capped off by an acrobatic finish in transition at the horn by John Paulino (New Bedford, Mass.) to give the Pride its first lead of the game at 44-42.
The visitors would take control of the game by using a 21-8 run in the opening eight-plus minutes as they opened up a 63-52 lead following a pull up jumper by Saintilus. Springfield would get as close a 66-60 with just over nine minutes on the clock when Curtiss Blische (Barkhamstad, Conn.) knocked down a pair from the charity stripe, but an 11-2 burst over the next four-minutes sealed the night for the Cougars as another triple from Neumann made it a 77-62 game. The Pride made a late push to trim it to single digits, but Clark was able to hold on for the conference win.
Springfield will wrap up the 2023 campaign at Coast Guard on Saturday.
