Box Score Davenport, Fla. - March 13, 2023 - The Springfield College baseball team held on for a 3-2 triumph over Hamilton on Monday evening in the third game of their Spring Break trip.
The win pushed the Pride's record to 2-2-1 on the year, while Hamilton slipped to 0-2.
Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.) led Springfield with a 2-for-4 day at the plate, while both Cadin Maynard (Waterford, Conn.) and Cole Zalegowski (North Haven, Conn.) produced a pair of hits. Connor Caverly (South Berwick, Maine) struck out seven in four innings of work while scattering four hits and an earned run, and Joe Hutchinson (Waltham, Mass.) picked up the save in relief.
The Pride got out of a bases-loaded jam in the first as a force out at home kept Hamilton off the scorerboard. Zalegowski would start a two-out rally in the second with a walk, and then stole second to get into scoring position. An error by the Continentals and run-scoring single by Traversa gave Springfield a 1-0 advantage, and the Pride would strike again in the second to double its lead. After Maynad led off the frame with a double, Andrew McCarty (Meriden, Conn.) drew a two-out walk and following a failed pick off attempt, Maynard would score from third to make it 2-0.
Hamilton would get a run back in the bottom half of the second thanks to a pair of singles. The game would remain scoreless until the seventh when Traversa's leadoff infield single resulted in the Pride's third run as he was later plated by a Maynard single up the middle. After the Pride was unable to get a run across with the bases loaded in the eighth, Hamilton got a leadoff solo homer to begin the ninth to pull within a run. The Continentals would get runners on second and third with two outs, but Hutchinson would strike out the final batter to wrap up the win for Springfield.
Springfield will clash with Salve Regina on Tuesday morning.
