Springfield, Mass. - March 24, 2023 - The Springfield College baseball team was edged by Elms College, 10-9, in a non-conference showdown on Friday afternoon at Mackenzie Stadium.

Elms boosted its record to 8-3 on the season, while Springfield dropped to 4-7-1.

Michael Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) had three hits for the Pride and drove in three runs on the day, while Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) and Michael Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.) each totaled a pair of hits and Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.) scored three times.

Springfield wasted no time getting their offense going as it plated three runs in the top of the first, with Barrett and and Sorgi ripping run-scoring singles before Mark Nofri (Naugatuck, Conn.) connected for a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.  Cadin Maynard (Waterford, Conn.) pushed the Pride's cushion to 4-0 in the second inning with a two-out single which plated Traversa from second. 

Elms would knot up the game with four runs in the bottom half of the second following four hits of their own, and later use a two-out single in the fourth to push across their fifth run of the game and take a 5-4 edge. 

Springfield responded with five runs in the fifth off just two hits to regain a 9-5 advantage. With the bases juiced, Luke DiMauro (Haddam, Conn.) drove in a run off a single before Kevin Gower (Seekonk, Mass.) and Cole Zalegowski (North Haven, Conn.) scored off a Blazers miscue and Barrett later drilled a two-run double to right. 

Elms would mount a late rally with five runs in the ninth to storm past the Pride.  The hosts would tally four hits before the game-tying and game-winning runs would cross the plate after earning a pair of walks.

Springfield will play again on Sunday when it hosts MCLA for a doubleheader beginning at 12 pm.
