Men's Gymnastics Takes Third At USAG Championships For Best Finish Since 2011

Springfield, Mass. - March 24, 2023 - The Springfield College men's gymnastics team finished third at the USA Gymnastics Men's Collegiate National Championships on Friday afternoon in Blake Arena.  Springfield totaled 387.350 points on the day, while Navy won the event with a 396.800.  Air Force took second with a 395.500, William & Mary tallied a 382.200, and Simpson notched a 360.500.

The two-day event kicked off on Friday and featured the team and all-around competition. The top eight scorers on each event, with a maximum of two athletes per program competing on each, will move onto individual apparatus finals on Saturday. For the Pride, it marked its highest finish at the USAG Championships since it also took third in 2011. 

Springfield had a pair of student-athletes earn All-America honors in the all-around as Dominic Ramalho (Hollis, N.H.) finished runner-up in the competition with a 78.350, while teammate Sam Kaplan (Fairhaven, Mass.) placed fourth with a 76.550.

Springfield began the day on the horizontal bar and Owen Carney (Sterlin, Mass.) led the way for the Pride with a seventh-place score of 12.950. Jaden Laubstein (Oakland, Calif.) delivered a 12.800 and Felix Kriedemann (Strasslach, Germany) was credited with a 12.500. On the floor, Jakarie Williams (Stockbridge, Ga.) hit for a 14.000 as he took third, while Ramalho added a 13.800 to tie for fourth, and Kriedemann registered a 12.900 as the hosts tallied a 66.400 on the event.

The Pride's Colton O'Brien (Crystal Lake, Ill.) produced the second-best score of the day on the pommel horse with a 13.550 and Kaplan recorded a seventh-place mark of 12.850, while Laubstein chipped in a 12.600. David Handron (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Kaplan each turned in 12.700's on the rings to tie for seventh, while Ramalho added a 12.550.  Ramalho highlighted Springfield's efforts on the vault as his 14.300 tied for sixth, Carney tied for eighth with a 14.150, and Andrae Butler (Taunton, Mass.) scored a 14.100 as the Pride posted a 70.200.

As the final competitor of the day on the parallel bars, Ramalho delivered the top score of the afternoon with a 14.000, following up Kaplan's fourth-place score of 13.800.  Carter Cochardo (Cicero, N.Y.) continued a 13.100 to aid in Springfield's team score of 66.150 on the event.  

Several members of the Pride will compete in Saturday's individual championship portion of the competition.
