Box Score Springfield, Mass. - March 29, 2023 - The Springfield College women's lacrosse team prevailed in overtime over Westfield State, 16-15, in a non-conference showdown on Wednesday night at Stagg Field.
The Pride evened its record to 4-4 with the result, while the Owls dropped to 3-5 this season.
Jade O'Connor (Baltimore, Md.) tallied four goals, including the game-winning strike in overtime, while Samantha Andresen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) led all scorers with six points on four goals and two helpers. Maddie Roy (Wilbraham, Mass.) added three goals and an assist, while Gianna Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Hannah Hibbert (Center Harbor, N.H.) combined four 15 draw controls. Emily McDermott (Marshfield, Mass.) finished the night with nine saves in the win.
After Westfield State opened up a 2-1 lead with just over 10 minutes left in the first, Springfield strung together three-straight goals from Roy, Arielle Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.), and Sarah Newton (Colchester, Conn.) in a 3:37 span to give the hosts a 4-2 cushion at the 5:17 mark. The visitors would answer back with a pair of goals just 41 seconds apart to tie the game up, only to have Andresen spin off her defender in the waning seconds to make it a 5-4 contest in favor of Pride heading into the second.
The teams would trade goals to begin the second until O'Connor and Roy would pump in strikes 31 seconds apart as the lead grew back to 8-6 at 10:55. A 3-1 push by the Owls would again knot the game up, this time at 9-9 with 2:37 on the clock, but Newton would take a skip pass from Roy to rip her second of the evening to give Springfield a 10-9 halftime advantage
It was a tale of two quarters in the second half, as Springfield controlled the third, outscoring the Owls by a 4-1 margin as Johnson got free for a goal off a great look from Newton at the 4:24 mark to give Springfield its largest lead of the game at 14-10.
However, the visitors would storm back by netting five goals in the fourth, as Springfield was held off the scoreboard for the final 8:11 of regulation. After the game-tying strike found the back of the net at 2:14, Springfield made one final late push in the final seconds, only to have Westfield State come up with a key save.
In the overtime, Hibbert won her seventh draw control of the night and O'Connor wasted no time, shaking her defender and sticking her fourth goal of the evening to complete the triumph.
Springfield will next play on Saturday when it hosts Mount Holyoke at 3:30 pm.
