Box Score Springfield, Mass. - March 8, 2023 - The Springfield College baseball team rallied from an early 7-0 deficit to tie Amherst, 8-8, on Wednesday afternoon at Archie Allen Field.
Springfield is now 0-1-1 on the 2023 season, while the Mammoths are 0-0-1.
Both Cadin Maynard (Waterford, Conn.) and Michael Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) went 3-for-5 on the day, with Maynard driving in three runs and Barrett crossing the plate three times. The Pride's relief pitchers were impressive as Joe Hutchinson (Waltham, Mass.), Nathan Kelleher-Mochak (Florence, Mass.), and Ryan Baker (North Reading, Mass.) combined to throwing 7.1 innings, scattering just four hits and allowing one unearned run.
The visitors raced out to a 7-0 lead through in the first two innings, highlighted by a five-run second, but Springfield would respond with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, including a Mark Nofri (Naugatuck, Conn.) run-scoring single. After Maynard drove in Barrett with a single in the third, the Mammoths responded with their final run of the game in the top of the fourth.
Springfield then began to string together its rally, with Barrett blasting a two-out triple to left center to score Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.), and Maynard following with the single to left to make it an 8-5 contest. Maynard would strike again in the sixth as he ripped a run-scoring double to right and the Pride would make it a one-run game in the seventh after Andrew McCarty (Meriden, Conn.) led off with a single and would eventually score on a passed ball.
Heading into the bottom of the ninth, Springfield would load the bases with just one out and pinch-hitter Kevin Gower (Seekonk, Mass.) was able to connect on a pitch that was misplayed in the infield, allowing pinch runner Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.) to scamper across home plate to knot the game up. Amherst was able to get out of the bases loaded situation and the game was called a draw due to darkness.
Springfield will next travel to Florida where it will open up a stretch of eight games in seven days, beginning with a doubleheader versus Muhlenberg on Sunday.
