Springfield, Mass. – April 11, 20223 – The Springfield College baseball team fell to MIT, 7-5, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Archie Allen Field this afternoon.

MIT improved to 9-10 overall and to 4-2 in the league, while Springfield, which fell in both games to the Engineers in the regular season series, dropped to 7-14-1 (1-5 NEWMAC).

Offensively, the Pride was led by Michael Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.), who went 3-for-4 on the day with an RBI, while Cadin Maynard (Waterford, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with two runs in the setback.

MIT went ahead 3-0 in the top of the first inning, but Springfield slowly chipped away at the deficit with single runs in the first, second, third and fourth innings for a 4-3 edge. The Pride used a pair of RBI doubles for their initial two runs of the contest – one by Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) and the other by Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.). An RBI single through the right side in the third by Lepere knotted the game at 3-3 before Traversa scored the go-ahead run in the fourth on a run down play.

With the score even at 4-4, MIT took advantage of an error and a pair of hit batters for three runs in the seventh inning. Springfield got one back in the bottom of the eighth, but MIT closer Ethan Siegel set the Pride down 1-2-3 in the ninth to account for the 7-5 final.

Ben Burke earned the win for the Engineers out of the pen as he pitched a pair of frames, scattered three hits and struck out three.

Springfield will travel to WPI to open a three game set with Worcester's Engineers on Friday, April 14 at 3:30 pm.
