Box Score Northborough, Mass. – April 14, 2023 – The Springfield College baseball team fell to WPI, 7-2, in game one of a three game New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) series this afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex.
The setback moved Springfield to 7-15-1 overall and to 1-6 in the NEWMAC, while WPI improved to 13-13 on the year and to 2-5 in league action.
Seven of the nine starters for Springfield notched at least one hit this afternoon highlighted by a 2-for-3 day at the plate to go along with an RBI from Michael Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.). Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.), Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) and Cole Zalegowski (North Haven, Conn.) all notched two hits today for the Pride.
Springfield jumped out to a 2-0 advantage on an RBI single by Cadin Maynard (Waterford, Conn.) and a sacrifice fly by Lepere in the top of the first. From that point on, WPI scored seven unanswered runs and got an eight inning pitching performance from Everett Wonson on the way to the 7-2 final.
WPI's seven runs on the day, four of which were tallied in the sixth inning, came on three RBI doubles, an RBI single, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.
Wonson earned the win (3-1) on eight innings, ten hits, two earned runs and five strikeouts.
Both teams will head to Western Massachusetts to finish off the series tomorrow afternoon with a NEWMAC doubleheader on Archie Allen Field beginning at 12:00 pm.
