Box Score 2 Springfield, Mass. – April 15, 2023 – Springfield College baseball snapped their six game losing skid with a two game New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) sweep of WPI this afternoon on Archie Allen Field. The Pride won the opener 9-5 and game two by a 3-2 final.
Springfield upped its record to 9-15-1 (3-6 NEWMAC), while WPI dipped to 13-15 (2-7 NEWMAC).
Game One:
Springfield trailed 5-1 midway through the fifth inning before the Pride exploded for four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth for a 9-5 advantage. With runners on second and third following an error, Michael Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.), plated Cole Zalegowski (North Haven, Conn.) for Springfield's second run. That was followed up with an RBI triple by Cadin Maynard (Waterford, Conn.), who later scored on a wild pitch, and a solo homer by Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.).
Sorgi's home run, his second of the season, knotted the game up at 5-5 at the end of five innings. After a shutdown top of the sixth from Ian Benoit (Pittsfield, Mass.), Springfield added four more runs on a trio of singles by Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.), Maynard and Sorgi for the 9-5 edge.
Benoit (1-1) earned the win as he posted 2.1 scoreless innings, struck out two and only conceded two hits in the middle innings out of the pen. Max Giacco (Meriden, Conn.) and Jack DeGirolamo (Newington, Conn.) combined for a perfect 1.2 innings following Benoit to secure the game one victory for Springfield.
Game Two:
WPI put together solo runs in the first and second, before and RBI single up the middle by Luke DiMauro (Haddam, Conn.) cut Springfield's deficit in half, 2-1. The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh, when Traversa plated DiMauro on a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the eighth, Springfield loaded the bases on a trio of walks. DiMauro came to the plate and walked to give the Pride a 3-2 edge.
Nathan Kelleher-Mochak (Florence, Mass.), who pitched 2.2 innings out of the pen for Springfield, shutdown WPI in the ninth and secured the NEWMAC sweep for the Pride. Connor Caverly (South Berwick, Maine) got the start for the hosts and pitched a strong 6.1 innings. He scattered four hits, allowed two runs (one earned) and tied his season-high with seven punchouts.
Springfield will host Emerson College in a single NEWMAC game on Tuesday, April 18 at 3:30 pm.
