Box Score 2 Springfield, Mass. – April 15, 2023 – No. 25 MIT defeated Springfield College softball twice in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Diane L. Potter Field. MIT won game one, 10-0, and game two, 8-0, in six innings.
MIT improved to 22-3 (9-1 NEWMAC), while Springfield, which came into the doubleheader with the country's longest winning streak, fell to 25-5 (8-2 NEWMAC).
Game One:
MIT scored three runs on a pair of RBI doubles in the top of the first inning and never looked back en route to the 10-0 win in the opener. MIT's two through five hitters went a combined 12-for-16 with eight RBI and eight runs.
Springfield strung together seven hits over the course of seven innings off of MIT starter Caroline Langmeyer as both Mackenzie Doyle (Glocester, R.I.) and Breannah McCann (San Diego, Calif.) registered a pair of hits for the Pride in game one, but weren't able to cross the plate.
Langmeyer, who struck out five for the Engineers, improved to 13-2 on the season.
Game Two:
As the Engineers did in game one, MIT struck for three runs in the top of the first inning and then added four in the second for a 7-0 lead.
Springfield was only able to get three hits off Engineers starter Becca O'Connor – one from each of Doyle, Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) and Alli Olsen (Ridgewood, N.J.). An RBI single in the top of the sixth for the Engineers plated their eighth run of the game before O'Connor ended the game in the bottom half of the frame despite DeRosa's single up the middle.
O'Connor improved to 7-0 for MIT with the shutout win as she tossed six innings and struck out three.
Springfield will host Westfield State University for non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 19 at 3:00 pm at Potter Field.
