Bats Explode Late as Baseball Picks Up 13-3 NEWMAC Win Over Emerson

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. – April 18, 2023 – The Springfield College baseball team came from behind and rallied with 13 unanswered runs for a 13-3 eight inning New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win over Emerson College on Tuesday afternoon at Archie Allen Field.

With today's result, Springfield improved to 10-15-1 overall and to 4-6 in the NEWMAC, while Emerson fell to 13-13 (3-7 NEWMAC).

After four scoreless innings, Emerson struck first in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs. The Lions began the frame with a single and a walk before Jake Hatch plated both runners on a double down the left field line that snuck just inside the third base bag.

Springfield managed just three hits over the first half of the game off Emerson starter Ty Bourne as Michael Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Cadin Maynard (Waterford, Conn.) singled in the first and fourth innings, respectively, before Cole Zalegowski (North Haven, Conn.) drilled a ground rule double to the gap in right in the bottom of the fifth.

Both team scraped together single runs as the score stood at 3-1 in favor of Emerson through six. The Lions scored on an RBI single to right by Milo DeBartlo, while Springfield, which left the bases loaded in the bottom half of the frame, took advantage of an error by the third baseman as Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.) came across with the Pride's first run of the contest.

Springfield rallied with six runs in the bottom of the seventh highlighted by a three run homer down the right field line by Barrett – his first round tripper of the season and second of his career. The Pride strung together seven total hits in the frame, which all began with a trio of infield singles before Tommy Hyjek (Kensington, Conn.) and Traversa registered RBI base knocks.

The Pride added six more in the bottom of the eighth to "walk off" with the 13-3, eight inning victory. Springfield loaded the bases on a single and two walks before Maynard plated two on a single to center, Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) drove in two on a double to left and Zalegowski drove in Sorgi on a knock to right. Andrew McCarty (Meriden, Conn.) ended the game as he drilled a double down the left field line to score Zalegowski for Springfield's 13th run.

Jarrad Coyne (Boston, Mass.), who pitched just a third of an inning, earned the win (1-0) as he got the Pride out of a jam with a punchout with runners on second and third. Joe Hutchinson (Waltham, Mass.) pitched a clean top of the eighth before Springfield exploded for six more runs in the bottom of the frame for its fourth NEWMAC win of the season.

Springfield will open a three game NEWMAC series at Clark University on Friday, April 21 at 3:30 pm in Worcester. The two teams will then travel to Springfield on Saturday, April 22 for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm to wrap up the weekend set.
