Box Score 2 New London, Conn. – April 21, 2023 – The Springfield College softball team held off Coast Guard for a split in an important New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Friday afternoon in Connecticut. The Bears took the opener, 4-2, before the Pride won game two, 7-6.
With the split, Springfield maintained its position in the NEWMAC standings and now sits at 28-6 overall and 9-3 in the league, while Coast Guard moved to 22-8 and to 8-4 in conference play.
Game One:
Coast Guard scored the game's first run on a wild pitch with runners at second and third before M. Dewey hit a two-run homer for a 3-0 edge through three. With one out in the top of the fifth following a single by Dana Serricchio (Stamford, Conn.) and a walk by Mackenzie Doyle (Glocester, R.I.), Amelia DeRosa (Miller Park, N.Y.) plated Serricchio on a single, while Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) brought home Doyle on a sac fly to cut Springfield's deficit to one, 3-2.
The hosts got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI groundout. Springfield attempted to rally in the sixth after three straight singles loaded the bases, but Coast Guard pitcher Isabelle Shroyer got the next three batters to ground out ending the threat for the Pride and set Springfield down 1-2-3 in the seventh for the 4-2 final.
Game Two:
Coast Guard took an early 2-0 lead through one on a homer by Dewey and an error before Springfield took advantage of an error by the hosts to retake the lead, 3-2 in the top of the third. Alli Olsen (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Maggie Britt (Bridgeport, Conn.) singled to start the third and Serricchio, who put the ball in play, came all the way around to score on two errors by the Bears.
Springfield took the lead for good in the top of the fifth inning on a three run homer by Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.) following singles by Doyle and DeRosa to start the frame. The Pride earned an insurance run in the top of the sixth on an error for a 7-4 advantage before Dewey's third home run of the day cut the lead to one, 7-6, in the bottom of the sixth.
DeRosa got Springfield through six in the circle and Gillian Kane (New Canaan, Conn.), who started in game one, earned the save with a spectacular 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to hold off Coast Guard and earn the split.
Springfield will travel to Babson College tomorrow, April 22 for another NEWMAC doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
