Box Score Northborough, Mass. – April 25, 2023 – A six run seventh inning by the host Lions was the difference this afternoon as the Springfield College baseball team fell to Emerson College, 8-2, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at the New England Baseball Complex.
Springfield fell to 11-18-1 overall and to 5-9 in the NEWMAC, while Emerson pushed to 16-19 and to 4-10 in the league. This season, the Pride and Lions split the series as Springfield won the opener 13-3 last Tuesday.
The Pride struck for one run in the first and one in the second for an early 2-0 edge. Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.) began the game with a double, before a single by Cadin Maynard (Waterford, Conn.) put runners on the corners. Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) gave Springfield a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to left. An RBI double by Noah Diamond (Glastonbury, Conn.) in the second after a double by Cole Zalegowski (North Haven, Conn.) to begin the frame double the Pride's advantage.
Emerson knotted the game, however, at 2-2, in the bottom of the third on a two run homer to center by Jake Hatch. The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh when Emerson put together six runs on four hits that included a pair of two run home runs by Matt Nachamie and Chris Ferara.
Springfield was only able to put two runners on over the final two innings as the Pride fell to Emerson by the 8-2 final.
Emerson starter Angelo Deer picked up the win (3-4) on 7.2 innings, six hits, two earned runs and six strikeouts.
Springfield will host Coast Guard to open a three game set on Friday, April 28 at 3:30 pm. Prior to the start of the game, the Pride will honor their senior class.
