Box Score 2 Norton, Mass. – April 8, 2023 – The Springfield College baseball team was edged by No. 17 Wheaton College in both ends of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Sidell Stadium.
Springfield fell to 7-13-1 overall and to 1-4 in NEWMAC play, while Wheaton improved to 18-4 and to 5-0 in the league.
Game One:
Wheaton struck first with a run in the bottom of the opening frame as A. Guindon hit a leadoff triple before he was brought home on a flyout from C. Brady. The Lyons added four more in the fourth on an RBI single and a three run homer by Nick Croteau for a 5-0 advantage.
Springfield scored its lone runs in the opener on a two run double from Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.) that scored both Andrew McCarty (Meriden, Conn.) and Max Giacco (Meriden, Conn.) after they singled and walked, respectively, with two outs.
The Wheaton pen shutdown the Springfield bats as after Ryan McCarroll (5-1) left the game, the three relievers did not surrender a hit and only walked one as the Lyons took game one 5-2.
Game Two:
Traversa, Michael Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Cadin Maynard (Waterford, Conn.) combined to go 7-for-16 with three runs and three RBI in the top three spots of Springfield's lineup in game two.
Traversa began the second game with a single up the middle before Barrett plated him and an RBI double down the right field line. Barrett quickly came across to score Springfield's second run on an single to left by Maynard.
An error, paired with an RBI double and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth gave Wheaton a 4-3 edge, a lead the Lyons did not relinquish. Wheaton starter Zach Clesas earned the win as he pitched six innings, allowed nine hits and three runs. The Lyons pen once again stymied the Springfield bats as the Pride notched just one hit over the final three frames despite getting the tying run on base in the top of the ninth.
Springfield will host MIT for another NEWMAC contest on Tuesday, April 11 at 3:30 pm.
