DeRosa Makes D3 Softball History; Springfield Falls to MIT on Day Three of NEWMAC Tournament

Box Score

Cambridge, Mass. – May 6, 2023 – Springfield College first baseman Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) made Division III softball history with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate in today's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament game at MIT, as she became the first first-year ever to reach 80 hits in a season.

Springfield now 34-8 after today's 7-2 setback to the top-seeded and No. 21 nationally-ranked Engineers (31-6), will take on fifth-seeded Babson College tomorrow afternoon in an elimination game at MIT at 12:00 pm.

DeRosa and Mackenzie Doyle (Glocester, R.I.) combined to go 6-for-8 at the top of the lineup for Springfield, but over the course of seven innings, the Pride left eight runners on base and were only able to push two runs across late in the seventh inning. Springfield had runners in scoring position in five of seven innings this afternoon.

MIT plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the first on a bases loaded walk and added a second in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Mackenzie Bivin.

The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth when the Engineers exploded for five runs all with two outs. RBI singles by Jordan Sell, Ava Ladd and Kennedy Atkinson paired with an error and a home run to center by Katia Pendowski accounted for MIT's five run frame.

Down to its final three outs in the top of the seventh, Maggie Britt (Bridgeport, Conn.) reached on an error and Dana Serricchio (Stamford, Conn.) walked before a groundout moved the runners to second and third. DeRosa notched an infield single and both runners scored to make it s 7-2 contest.

MIT starter Caroline Langmeyer (18-4), who allowed seven hits and two unearned runs, struck out the final two batters of the game to send the Engineers into the NEWMAC final tomorrow. The first-year tallied nine punchouts on the day.

Springfield and Babson will play tomorrow on Briggs Field at 12:00 pm with the winner advancing to take on MIT at 2:00 pm. In order to force an if necessary game on Monday afternoon, either Springfield or Babson will have to win twice tomorrow.
