Box Score Springfield, Mass. – September 19, 2023 – The Springfield College men's soccer team was edged by Wesleyan University (Conn.), 1-0, in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday evening on Brock-Affleck Field.
The Pride now sit at 2-3-1, while Wesleyan improved to 3-0-1 this season.
As a team, Wesleyan held an 11-2 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Neither team could score until the 53rd minute when Lucas Ruehlemann gathered a bouncing ball inside the six-yard box and tucked it into the bottom right corner of the net to give Wesleyan all of the offense it would need.
Springfield had two really good looks at net in the second stanza – both of which came from senior Chris Cruz (Greenwich, Conn.). In the 52nd minute, Cruz fired a curling shot towards the net but it was stopped by Wesleyan keeper Mathis Blanc. Six minutes later, Cruz took a free kick from just atop the 16-yard box, but his attempt went square on net right to Blanc.
Noah Pote (Washington, Conn.) made three saves in net for Springfield as his record pushed to 2-3-1 on the season, while Blanc made both saves for Wesleyan tonight for the shutout.
Springfield will return to action on Saturday, September 23 with a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup at Clark University beginning at 1:00 pm.
