Box Score Springfield, Mass. – September 3, 2023 – Western New England University used three second half goals to pull away for a 4-1 win over the Springfield College field hockey program this afternoon on Stagg Field. The host Pride dipped to 0-2 on the young season, while the Golden Bears improved to 2-0 through one weekend of play.
Western New England held an 11-8 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in penalty corners. Remy Niland (Marshfield, Mass.) made a pair of saves for Springfield in the effort.
The Golden Bears struck first with just 45-seconds to play in the opening stanza, as Olyvia Whyte tipped the ball into the cage off a short thread from Olivia Eastman. Springfield first-year Hailey Gaydos (Newington, Conn.) knotted the contest with her first collegiate goal in the 26th minute of action. Gaydos scooped up the ball off a defensive save and tucked it into the cage as the score stood at 1-1 at the break.
Western New England tallied one goal in the third and two in the fourth, which came just over a minute apart, to pull away for the 4-1 road win. Amanda Burns notched the goal in the third, while in the fourth Kara Edwards recorded the Golden Bears' third goal and the assist on their fourth.
Springfield will travel to Worcester State University for its first road contest of the season on Thursday, September 7 at 7:00 pm.
